Vivo launches premium X200 smartphone weeks after Apple, Huawei release new handsets

Chinese smartphone giant Vivo on Monday launched its premium X200 series on the mainland, featuring MediaTek’s new 3-nanometre processor and Live Photo format capability, weeks after Apple and Huawei Technologies rolled out their latest flagship handset models.

Priced from 4,299 yuan (US$608) to 6,799 yuan, the X200 series marks the latest effort by Vivo to crack the industry’s lucrative high-end segment in the world’s largest smartphone market and across the globe. Vivo said it will start shipping the X200 series from October 19.

Initially known for its low-budget handsets, Vivo has risen to become the world’s No 4 smartphone vendor in the second quarter, with a 9.1 per share in a tie with Oppo, according to research firm IDC. In China, Vivo ranked as the nation’s top smartphone vendor with an 18.5 per cent share in that quarter, according to Counterpoint Research.

The Dongguan-based company’s new handset series comes in three models – the entry level X200 as well as the X200 Pro and X200 Pro mini – powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 system-on-a-chip, which the Taiwanese semiconductor firm touts as “optimised for edge artificial intelligence (AI) applications, immersive gaming and incredible photography”.
Edge AI refers to the deployment of AI models directly on devices to enable real-time data processing and analysis, without reliance on cloud computing services.

That advanced new chip in the X200 reflects Vivo’s drive to push the latest technology in its smartphones, ahead of other Android handset competitors.

MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 are expected to be adopted by the likes of Samsung Electronics, Oppo and Xiaomi’s Redmi later this year or early in 2025.

Supporting the Live Photo format features ensures the X200 imaging system’s seamless compatibility with that of the iPhone, Vivo said in a statement.

On other imaging features, the flagship X200 Pro model is powered by a new Sony sensor and a Zeiss “apochromatically corrected” camera with 200 million pixels, which is touted to significantly improve detail at 20x zoom and beyond with the help of its algorithms.

In addition, the model supports 4K video recording at 120 frames per second and cinematic slow-motion video capture, which is a new feature provided by Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro models.

It also provides some AI functions including “Origin Island”, which is similar to iPhone’s Dynamic Island but with more cross-app operations, and “Circle to Search” that is similar to a Samsung function introduced in January.

Later this year and early in 2025, the X200 is expected to face new Android competition with similar advanced processing power. These include Oppo’s Find X8, Xiaomi’s Redmi K80 and Samsung’s S25 FE.
